I have felt the same way too. Unfortunately, I'm one of the 'untrained' people, but I want to be so much better. I've been working in prepress departments for 7 years. I know my job, and I do it well. But so often, something comes up that I understand what is happening but I don't know how or why it works. Give me an ad, and I can build it, design it, send it, print it...whatever. But start talking about postscript files and CTP and I get lost. Prepress Software :: InDesign PDFs imported into Quark 4 crashing Quark on print

First of all, let me say: I know I know! Quark 4!?!? What am I thinking? I work in a newspaper where the company is trying to upgrade the entire country to InDesign and CS3. Our editorial departments still run on Quark 4 and will not be upgraded until next year. So in the meantime, we need to make this sloppy mess work. Second of all: We are one of 2 newspapers in the company that have been upgraded to CS3. Everyone else is still on CS2. So we have no one else to ask. Now for the problem. Computer To Plate :: Screen not processing exported InDesign CS3 PDF

Using Screen Ver3.12 212-2 Customer file came in using InDesign CS3. Co-worker exported file to PDF. Registered within Screen. Never processed. Back to InDesign CS3 to generate .ps file Distilled using Acrobat Professional 7 Distiller. Screen never processed it again. Why? A work around JUST discovered, as I type. . . Opened PDF in Acrobat Professional 7. Do not have 8. Dialog box indicated customer's file created in Acrobat 8. Opened anyway. RESAVED as Encapsulated Postscript. I am just starting work at a small print shop. The files we get are mainly business cards or envelopes, or 8.5x11 newsletters. Example=The employees open a business card in Quark or Indesign and make a new template in a new document for our 13.5x22 poly plate maker 4 up. (if it is in InDesign they use that template, and if it is a quark document they open in a Quark template ) Then they copy and paste the file to the new layout and send it along. If you're able to create PDFs from Indd, and the document is not too complex, you may well be better to try and open the Qxd file in Indd, do a little fixing and export it from there. No wonder you're having difficulty creating a PDF, you're asking about grass-roots info starting with 'how to create a postscript file'. If we (everyone else help here please) give you basic points, let us know if you need a detailed step-by-step plan; It depends on what printer PPD your using as to how your PDF will be made, a mono-only printer will only create a mono image. I've been using InDesign for a couple of years now and always use it instead of Quark 6 - much prefer the Adobe interface and integration with the other Adobe products and the fact that I can use alpha transparency, drop shadows etc within the app. Quicker and easier. - Read More..
