I was caught off-guard by the search issue, but I bet no one including myself would've ever thought a networked MAC of any kind could'nt do a search on a server built by MAC! Done venting now, so let me explain our situation a little better. We are a small lan with 2 servers and 22 clients. One pre-intel panther xserve (no problems) and one intel we recently purchased. 3 of the client computers are osx and the rest are os9. Our printing consists of about 240 small tifs on a letter size doc. Each tif is about 450k. We print to 2 minoltas, a bizhub c352 and a bizhub c6500 both w/fiery rips. What kind of server is that? How are you connecting to it, afp:// or smb://, etc. In your network settings is appletalk active, on server (if apple), and on the workstation? I read about people having these problems alot with Quark 6.5 but I don't have them. I still believe it can easily be the settings and methods of the process too. I have methods and software devices in PDF-X-Robot that work around alot of known issues. OS 9 support, That should be no problem here, we killed OS 9 years ago. QuarkXpress 7 won't even run with OS 10.3.9. I even have a couple of the old iMac G3 600's running OS 10.4.10 and they run great. We run all our PC prepress jobs in OS X too since it supports use of windows fonts. I am wondering what is the advantage. Afterall the server is BSD Unix underneath and for simple file service, what could be that different? If it's like the upgrade top 10.4, we will be better off waiting for a couple of months till problems are found and patche... - Read More..

Thanks to you all for your input - I'll give you some more insight to whats happening. We create kids pop-up books. So we have a quark document with artwork as a tiff. On top of that we have quark text, then on top of that we have a cutter guide which is created in Illustrator. This will be just a 100% magenta or 100% black vector line art, no background, no text or any other fancy business like drop shadows etc. this is then brought into a picture box in quark that overlays all the text and art so it has no run-around or background colour. I have an issue i actually noticed back in CS2 but it seems that CS3 may have the same issue as well. The problem is that when i print a InDesign document through Adobe PDF print driver with High resolution settings, Sometimes the TEXT FRAME EDGES or other FRAME EDGES will appear on PDF. Or sometimes the text frame boxes will have a slight tint shade. I thought this might be a Transparency Flattener issue but from what i can tell i have it set to High Resolution. What causes this? joepostscript, good morning! thanks for the reply. i can't say what is recommended for whose workflow, everyone just has to find a way that works for them, and im sure lots of people are comfortable with different ways of font management, and have a lot of success with it. i can only speak from my experience, and i have worked in 2 large, high-volume prepress departments, and have used this method exclusively for 5 years, and all of our font issues have dried up. im not saying it works for everyone, but i can say that in my experience, it is the quickest, easiest, most reliable way we have found. activatin... - Read More..

After spending nearly 22 grand on a new xserve raid I find out NONE of my 20 os9 clients can sherlock anything! You've got to be kidding me right? Let me get this right, an apple can't search an apple fileserver! The apple sales folks might have said something about that BEFORE we bought it. They SUCK!
